Presentation on the City of Flagstaff’s Highway Safety Improvement Program The Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), which was signed into law in 2005, established the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) as a Federal-Aid Program. The overall purpose of this program is to achieve a significant reduction in traffic fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads through the implementation of infrastructure-related highway improvements. The City of Flagstaff competes annually for a roughly $600k pool of money distributed by the Flagstaff Metropolitan Planning Organization. Presentation and Discussion of the Flagstaff Urban Trails System Master Plan The Flagstaff Urban Trails System is a city-wide network of non-motorized, shared-use pathways that are used by bicyclists, walkers, hikers, runners, and other users for both recreation and transportation. At present there are just over 50 miles of FUTS trails in Flagstaff, with about 80 more miles of trails shown on the Master Plan. The FUTS Master Plan serves as an outline for the comprehensive and systematic process for setting priorities for construction of planned, future trail segments. Presentation and Discussion of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committees to the Transportation Commission The City Transportation Commission has two subcommittees appointed to it. Those are the Bicycle Advisory Committee and the Pedestrian Advisory Committee. The Bicycle Advisory Committee and the Pedestrian Advisory Committee are composed of seven members appointed by the Transportation Commission to 3 year terms. The Committees investigates, considers, and makes recommendations to the Transportation Commission on items assigned to them by the Commission. These two Committees also develop their own list of agenda items which are reported back to the Commission on a monthly basis. Staff Recommendation: Informational Item, no action required
